Wi-LAN, RIM settle patent dispute

Controversial Canadian firm Wi-LAN Inc. and Research In Motion resolved a patent suit that Wi-LAN filed against RIM in June, claiming that it had infringed upon its patents for making and selling products that include mobile handheld devices and other equipment. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. 

Ottawa-based Wi-LAN, which some consider a patent troll, filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division--a court that is favored by patent-license companies seeking big judgments. Wi-LAN also named Motorola and UTStarCom in the case.
