Samsung's net rises 37 percent

Samsung Electronics said its first quarter profit increased by 37 percent thanks to its mobile phone unit and flat-panel unit, which each contributed about $1 billion in operating profit. The chipset unit, however, did beat expectations by remaining profitable. Samsung earned $2.2 billion during the quarter. Samsung noted that its marketshare of the global mobile phone market is right behind Nokia's. Samsung sold 46.3 million units during the quarter, which is an increase of 33 percent from last year.
